At the recent ESPY Trophies, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and quarterback Tom Brady were big winners, taking home three awards. According to Luke Easterling of USA Today, the Buccaneers were voted Best Team, while Brady, 43, was selected Best Athlete in Men’s Sports and Best NFL Player. According to Bucs Nation, the Buccaneers received the honor months after winning their first Super Bowl title since 2002 with a superb 31-9 victory against the reigning champion Kansas City Chiefs at their own Raymond James Stadium.

Bucs are the first team in the NFL to earn Best Team since 2014.

After defeating Stanford Women’s Basketball, Baylor Men’s Basketball, Alabama Football, Oklahoma Softball, the Seattle Storm, and the Los Angeles Dodgers for the trophy, the Buccaneers became the first NFL club to win the honor since the Seattle Seahawks in 2014. Several Buccaneers were there to accept the trophy, including tight end Rob Gronkowski. During his speech, Gronkowski stated, “On the first day of practice, I was just looked around and I was like, ‘Damn, we have a s— load of talent, baby.” According to Gronkowski, head coach Bruce Arians constantly reminded his players that if they stay together, no one can defeat them. Because the Buccaneers were stacked on offense (wide outs Mike Evans, Chris Godwin, and Antonio Brown, as well as running backs Ronald Jones and Leonard Fournette), Gronkowski was right (Shaq Barrett, Devin White, Lavonte David, Vita Vea, Jason Pierre-Paul and Ndamukong Suh).

Brady posted a picture of his teammates receiving the trophy to his Instagram account, along with the caption, “So many amazing teams in sports this year, but I believe the ESPY voters got this one right!”

Such a unique bunch, and we’re not finished yet.” Next season, the Buccaneers want to become the first NFL club since the 2003-04 New England Patriots to win back-to-back Super Bowls.

Brady is thankful for the opportunity to be considered.

Brady, for his part, became the first NFL player to win the Best Athlete honor since Drew Brees of the New Orleans Saints did it in 2010.

Although the veteran quarterback was unable to attend the ceremony, he did record an acceptance speech. In his taped address, Brady stated, “I am extremely pleased to be selected as Best Athlete in Men’s Sports.”

Brady stated he enjoys football and enjoys the fact that it is a team sport, despite the fact that he doesn’t play for individual accolades or numbers. “To be considered for this great prize with LeBron (James), Tiger (Woods), and Michael Jordan (Michael Jordan) is very cool,” Brady added. Along with Formula 1 driver Lewis Hamilton, Denver Nuggets center and reigning NBA Most Valuable Player Nikola Jokic, and Edmonton Oilers center Connor McDavid, the veteran quarterback was nominated.

Brady also won the award for “Best NFL Player,” beating out Aaron Donald of the Los Angeles Rams, Aaron Rodgers of the Green Bay Packers, and Derrick Henry of the Tennessee Titans. Brady was previously dubbed the best athlete of all time, not only in football, by Hall of Fame basketball star Charles Barkley.
