The Los Angeles Police Department, which recently formed a special task unit comprised of seasoned robbery homicide detectives, claimed they had increased patrols at the mall, but the suspects chose a time when there were no officers there.
A security officer who confronted the robbers was sprayed in the face with a chemical and was taken to a nearby hospital after being treated on the spot. Police are still attempting to figure out what that chemical was, but they left all the doors open for a few hours after the heist so that the chemical might escape.

This is the latest in a string of robberies that has lasted a week. A big throng of looters smashed into a Nordstrom shop in The Grove only a few days ago, a crime that was related to another theft in South Los Angeles an hour before.
Authorities in Beverley Hills investigated two smash-and-grab crimes on Rodeo Drive on Sunday. Louis Vuitton and Saks Fifth Avenue were two of the damaged stores, however no product was stolen from either.
A robbery team shot and murdered a 23-year-old guy outside the Bossa Nova Restaurant in Hollywood over the weekend.

State lawmakers blame minimal punishment for the crimes as smash-and-grab robberies continue to climb throughout the Christmas shopping season.
Rick Caruso, the owner of The Grove and a billionaire businessman, slammed local politicians for not doing more to combat growing crime. Caruso has contemplated running for mayor of Los Angeles.

Gov. Gavin Newsom talked on the need for improved suspect prosecution.
“I have no pity or understanding for those who smash and grab, steal people’s belongings, and cause chaos and horror in our streets. “None,” Newsom said emphatically.
Critics believe that the latest crime surge is the consequence of years of politicians – and even voters – softening the punishments for these crimes.
