Sixers Rumors: Insider Pitches Unconventional Simmons Trade

The Sixers have been in discussions with the Brooklyn Nets as they explore a trade for star point guard Kyrie Irving. In order to make the deal work, Philadelphia would need to include their top-three protected first round pick and possibly another asset.

The espn simmons trade is a rumor that has been circulating for a while. Sixers fans are hoping that the team will make an unconventional move and trade center Joel Embiid to the Lakers in exchange for forward Brandon Ingram and guard Kyle Kuzma.

In terms of real news, we may have entered the dog days of the NBA calendar, but the Philadelphia 76ers continue to make headlines due to Ben Simmons’ predicament. Fans and commentators alike float a plethora of fresh Simmons-centric deals with each passing day, and Thursday was no exception.

Chris Broussard, who spoke on Fox Sports 1’s First Things First show, became the latest NBA insider to propose a Simmons trade. To suggest that his proposed trade would be difficult to sell to 76ers president Daryl Morey would be an understatement.

According to Broussard, the transaction would look something like this:

  • Ben Simmons is on his way to the Golden State Warriors.
  • Draymond Green and James Wiseman are on their way to the Philadelphia 76ers.

Broussard Dissects the Arrangement

Is Ben Simmons working for the Golden State Warriors a good idea?

“If Richard Simmons joins the Warriors next season, they’ll be a force to be reckoned with!… Ben Simmons, on the other hand, is a younger, more capable version of Draymond Green. If I were the Warriors, I’d look to move Draymond.” pic.twitter.com/xHaTJUvgCp — @Chris Broussard

Despite the fact that a lot of talent would be on the move in that deal, it obviously benefits one side over the other. Broussard was particularly focused on the Warriors while selling and breaking down the hypothetical trade.

“Look, if the Warriors acquire Richard Simmons, they’re going to be terrific next season!” he said. “However, I’m out on this in general. Because I believe Ben is a more youthful and improved version of Draymond Green. And if I were the Warriors, I would trade Draymond Green.”

Broussard went on to say:

“So I’ll trade them Draymond, and as much as I hate to part with the youngster, James Wiseman for Ben Simmons. And now I’m putting Ben Simmons in the shoes of Draymond Green. When he’s not moving the ball, the playmaker and excellent defender may be found at the dunker position on offense.”

Why It Doesn’t Make Sense for Philly (At All)

That contract would work with only those three players now, from a strictly financial perspective. And Broussard is correct in his appraisal of Simmons’ potential as a small-ball big man for the Warriors. But, as always, it takes two to tango, and although Green and Wiseman are valuable assets, this trade isn’t a good fit for Philadelphia.

Green has made hay as a four/five having being miscast as a winger early in his career. Wiseman is a stone-cold five-man. So, with Joel Embiid in the center, Tobias Harris in the frontcourt next to him, and Andre Drummond off the bench, that particular combination would simply create a huge logjam down low.

Damian Lillard has been reported to be Morey’s top goal throughout this process for a reason. The Sixers need a high-level floor general who can direct the ship offensively, drive the tempo, spread the floor a bit, and call his own number when the opportunity arises in crunch time.

To put it another way, either a confident Simmons with a solid jump shot or a competent substitute.

Offensively, they don’t need a slew of seven-footers with little speed or space (and no quarterback to throw them the ball). An uber-talented former No. 2 overall selection who would struggle to see the court due to playing behind a top-five NBA player in his prime isn’t going to fly, either.

It’s also worth remembering that the Sixers and Warriors have allegedly tried and failed to make a Simmons trade before. Broussard’s hypothetical trade would likely stay just that until something dramatic happens.
