It’s morning; there’s a little cold in the air, a rooster crows in the distance, and people are getting ready for the day: breakfast, coffee, dropping the kids off at school, going to work…
COVID tales, global turmoil, city pain, climate change, and apparently unending fires have dominated the headlines. While the rest of us go about our daily routines, there are some who rise to the occasion, springing into action at a moment’s notice when life takes an unexpected turn and first responders are required. Santa Margarita Fire District volunteers have been answering the call for almost 100 years as of August.
On April 20, 1889, the town of Santa Margarita was incorporated with the sale of parcels from Patrick Murphy’s Santa Margarita Rancho holdings during a Grand Auction. However, as the town grew in population and filled in with homes and businesses, it became clear that emergency response could not be provided by the cities of San Luis Obispo or Atascadero, and on August 2, 1921, the County Board of Supervisors officially declared the formation of the Santa Margarita Fire District in a Resolution. The special Fire Protection District is financed by and intended to serve the properties on the 307 acres inside the town proper, which is bordered by the Santa Margarita Ranch.

The Santa Margarita Fire Protection District has been supported by community volunteers ready to help people in need since its beginnings. It has evolved over time from neighbors helping neighbors to the “Claud Proud Fire Department” in the late 1950s and early 1960s to its current configuration, which was spearheaded by Mr. Vernon Stewart and Mr. Herb Brazzi in 1963 to establish a Fire Board, build the Santa Margarita Fire Station in the heart of downtown, and recruit volunteers to fill staff positions.
With the departure of long-time residents and the entrance of many new young families from bigger cities drawn by Santa Margarita’s small-town feel and friendly community, the town’s population has changed dramatically in recent years. Many people are unaware that the Santa Margarita Fire Department (SMFD) is still run entirely by volunteers.

“All firemen are volunteers and are trained in methods such as fire suppression, search and rescue, and BLS emergency medical skills,” according to the santamargaritafiredept.org website. “Provide safe, effective, and fast service to the people of Santa Margarita, including but not limited to: emergency medical assistance, wildfires, structural fires, and large-scale crises such as natural and man-made catastrophes,” according to the SMFD’s mission statement.
With the Santa Margarita Fire Department in the heart of town, volunteers with quick turnout times can respond to any number of emergency situations within its district in under seven minutes, in addition to providing automatic aid with Cal Fire and mutual assistance to outside areas as needed, as seen with a crew sent to help battle the rec center fire.
Santa Margarita Fire Department volunteers participate in a variety of community activities as members of the community. Among other things, they participate in 4th of July parades, host an annual Easter Egg Hunt for the town kids, attend the Friends of the Library “Evening in Santa Margarita” event, and provide Fire Safety public outreach to the school.
The Santa Margarita Volunteer Fire Department will host a 100 Year Celebration Event on Sunday, October 24 to celebrate its centenary.
At 4 p.m., the Santa Margarita Fire Station, located at 22375 El Camino Real in Santa Margarita, will host a fun, family-friendly, and educational event. A barbecue will be served, as well as music and tours of the station and its equipment. To learn more, meet Fire Chief Bob Murach or speak with Santa Margarita’s firemen. T-shirts commemorating the 100th anniversary will be sold, and contributions will be welcomed to assist the department meet its requirements.
The SMVFD has one part-time Fire Chief, one part-time Deputy Chief, one Paid Call Firefighter (PCF) Captain, one Paid Call Firefighter Lieutenant, Paid Call Firefighters, and new recruits. Chief Bob Murach says they are constantly looking for new volunteers who must complete the Firefighter Academy and complete a minimum of one year of training before becoming a PCF. Every 2nd and 4th Wednesday of the month at 7 p.m., volunteers from all walks of life are invited to come to the station and participate in a practice. To enroll, you must be 18 years old, and to drive, you must be 21 years old.
